Make the Life Match the Words
Not every sentence demands liveliness. Indeed, audiences are put off by speakers that seem too enthusiastic and too animated. Have you ever felt like telling a speaker to settle down? Listeners can detect when you’re trying too hard. Have you been in a situation in which the right answer was wrong so you convincingly told a white lie? “No, I don’t think anyone noticed your mistake. Don’t worry about it.” You probably added a bit of life to those words to make them believable. Did it work? Maybe. Most often, though, audiences know if you are faking emotion. Say, “This new procedure is great!” in a way that conveys enthusiasm, but only if you are truly enthusiastic about it. Be genuine.
Your goal is always to have the perfect blend of message and feeling, but if you are going to make a mistake, err on the side of adding extra feeling. That way, you guarantee that your audience is paying attention. No one expects a trainer to say, “The new credit card reader will not allow swiping the card, but will only allow inserting the card into the chip reader” as if that were the most amazing thing to ever occur. But no one expects a manager to say, “Kim is the employee of the month” in a way that indicates complete lack of interest, either. Do you know the joke about the new employee who finishes with the punch line, “That wasn’t the copier! That was the shredder!!” Even if you don’t, you can probably guess how it might go. Good readers “hear” lines being delivered in the appropriate way. Good speakers deliver those lines with the proper feeling.
